Fall Pond Preperation

With Labor Day upon us, it won’t be long before the leaves start falling and the crisp air of autumn is commonplace.

Pond owners need to be prepared for this time of year since a lot can still happen within a pond environment.  Fish slow down and quit eating, plants (particularly tropicals) begin to die off and the water temperature begins to cool.

It’s important, if you decide to keep the pond operational over the winter to provide adequate aeration for fish since as plants die off, oxygen is often pulled from the water. 

It’s also a good idea to try and keep accumulated leaves and other things from dropping into the pond so a good quality pond netting, which can be stretched across and cover the pond is very useful.

Continued use of bacteria is advised and it’s ideal to look for an all season or all temperature formula since most bacteria begin to slow down at about 50 degrees water temp.  With an cold and warm weather form, you’ll continue to get cleaning and balance throughout the fall and right up to ice up of the pond.
